CoroTurn® Plus helps manufacturers stabilize quality, increase productivity and accelerate automation

Sandvik Coromant, a world leader in metalcutting tools and manufacturing solutions, has introduced CoroTurn® Plus, a sensorized turning adapter that provides real-time visibility, increased process security, and scalable automation for turning operations. By making cutting forces, vibrations, chatter, and condition visible as they occur during cutting, the solution helps teams stabilize performance, improve component quality and consistency, and reduce waste.

CoroTurn® Plus combines sensorized tools with two levels of digital capability. Used in conjunction with CoroPlus® Viewer, it provides real-time, passive information to support operator decisions. When combined with CoroPlus® Connected, the same signals enable active, machine-integrated protective actions within predefined limits, helping users clearly distinguish between visualization and automated response.

CoroTurn® Plus sends real-time data from the cutting zone to CoroPlus® Viewer on a PC or tablet, enabling faster, data-driven decisions and traceable continuous improvement. Real-time visualization and benchmarking support precise interventions when trends deviate from predefined limits. Operators receive audible alerts when limits are exceeded, can scroll through values, and can analyze and report deviations to accelerate root cause analysis. As tool condition signals accumulate, teams can identify when an insert is nearing the end of its useful life and replace it at the right time, extending tool life and avoiding unplanned downtime.

For machine-integrated control, CoroTurn® Plus connects to CoroPlus® Connected, which is fully integrated with the machine's NC. Users set chatter, load, and vibration limits within the software or via NC code; if an unexpected event occurs, the control automatically initiates protective shutdown actions to protect components, tools, and equipment. These actions can be configured by the end user.

Feedrate and cutting speed override configurators enable in-process optimization, while data tracked by component position enhances diagnostics and continuous improvement. This autonomy allows the machine to manage more routine decisions within configured limits, increasing effective operating hours (especially during unattended evening or night shifts) and reducing downtime during the day.

Industrialized features include automatic bar connection and disconnection, ready-to-run system controls, data logging start and stop, and system downtime messages. Storing and documenting cutting data for each cycle allows teams to compare batch performance, identify material deviations early, and maintain end-user documentation and certificates for complete traceability. Together, sensorized tools, visual analytics, and NC integration transform raw signals into enforced limits and actions, making production more stable, safe, and consistent, with fewer interventions.

“With CoroTurn® Plus, we can observe hidden cutting behavior and transform it into clear signals so teams can recognize material variations, tool wear, and process instabilities as they occur,” said Åke Åxner, Global Project Manager – Machine Integration at Sandvik Coromant. “When combined with CoroPlus® Connected, the control makes protective decisions, stopping, retracting, and restarting within predefined limits, which reduces unplanned downtime and increases overall machine utilization.”

“Sensorized tools represent the most practical solution to more advanced automation because they transform raw signals into safe actions applied by the machine,” added Leland Bailey, Project Manager at Sandvik Coromant. “By capturing high-resolution cutting data and connecting it directly to the control, teams can open unattended windows, reduce downtime, accurately identify the end of insert life, and reinforce best practices. At the same time, clear, actionable visualizations help operators of all experience levels make confident, informed decisions.”

For the production of high-quality components such as discs, cases, shafts, pumps, and valves, CoroTurn® Plus offers unprecedented real-time insights into what's happening directly inside the cut. For more information, visit the website.

Mitutoyo is a dmg mori qualified products (dmqp) partner

Mitutoyo has been included in the DMG MORI Qualified Products (DMQP) program, aiming to provide customers with a combination of high-end precision machining and advanced inline precision measuring equipment. Dr. Masahiko Mori, President and CEO of DMG MORI, and Shigeyuki Sasaki, Acting President of Mitutoyo Corporation, signed the partnership during the DMG MORI Open House held in Pfronten, Germany. The DMG MORI Qualified Products portfolio is continually growing and now includes a wide range of machine components, peripherals, and accessories, including tools, clamping devices, software, measurement technology, and cooling lubricants. This range is increasingly complemented by digital solutions that specialize machines and machining processes or make them more efficient. To meet the growing need for technological diversification and innovation, DMG MORI is continually expanding its portfolio. At the Open House in Pfronten, held in early February, four new partner companies were presented whose technologies significantly contribute to efficient production: in the case of Mitutoyo, the reliable integration of precision measurement into the machining process. During the DMG MORI Open House in Pfronten, Germany, a ten-day event that welcomed more than 6,700 visitors, Dr. Eng. Masahiko Mori, President and CEO of DMG MORI, and Shigeyuki Sasaki, Acting President of Mitutoyo Corporation, officially launched Mitutoyo's entry into the DMQP partnership, marking a new milestone in the cooperation between the two companies. This cooperation has intensified in recent years. John Kooning, Managing Director of DMG MORI NL, who spearheaded Mitutoyo's integration into the DMQP program, stated: " Mitutoyo has been actively participating in our Open Houses for many years, demonstrating the perfect compatibility and added value of its products with our machines. In Europe, we have also extended this collaboration to the important EMO trade fair in 2023 and 2025. " Mitutoyo's DMQP status should be viewed in the context of the DMG MORI Machining Transformation (MX) strategy, which represents a true revolution in the manufacturing industry. A key component of MX is technology integration, combining different processes such as turning, milling, grinding, and even measurement functions in a single machine tool to achieve greater productivity. This integration reduces the number of operators required, frees them from having to perform multiple setups, and helps create a rewarding work environment within a company. More time can be dedicated to high-value activities, making work more rewarding for employees. Integrated measurement is the key here for Mitutoyo. Pralhad Thapa, Business Solution Manager: "DMG MORI chose our compact MiSTAR 555 coordinate measuring machine, which can be physically installed in the production line, in close proximity to the machine tool. Movement between machines can be performed by a robot. From a software perspective, a seamless connection is created using DMG MORI's Tulip software." The result: the customer can combine precision machining—milling, turning, integrated grinding, etc.—with high-precision measurements, without the need to transport parts to a dedicated measuring room or laboratory. Indeed, stable dimensions can be guaranteed even when maximum precision is required, and any deviations will be detected so quickly that the user can react before tolerances are exceeded. Scrap will be reduced and productivity will be improved. The MiSTAR 555 is the perfect coordinate measuring machine (CMM) for this purpose, as it is designed for factory applications of almost any size and shape. For example, it can operate at temperatures ranging from 10°C to 40°C. Even in harsh environments, it offers exceptional speed and precision, effectively creating the basis for high utilization of a single machining center, rather than the partial utilization of several simple machines. This is a clear goal of the DMG MORI MX Machining Transformation strategy, as an efficient path to the "Factory of the Future." Mitutoyo is proud to be part of this strategy. In addition to the inline CNC CMM, the DMQP offering will include other Mitutoyo precision instruments and machines. These offerings also include packages for schools and universities: the two companies have long collaborated in this field, promoting the dissemination of specialized skills in the workshop environment. And there are other similarities. Henk Slotboom, Marketing Director of Mitutoyo Europe: "Social commitment is very important to both DMG MORI and Mitutoyo, and both companies have set very high quality standards in their respective markets." DMG MORI is a leading global manufacturer of high-precision machine tools and is represented in 44 countries with 124 sales and service locations, including 17 production facilities. As a "Global One Company," over 13,500 employees drive the development of holistic solutions for the manufacturing industry. Following the guiding principle of Machining Transformation (MX), DMG MORI combines four pillars for efficient and sustainable production of the future: process integration, automation, digital transformation (DX), and green transformation (GX). DMG MORI stands for innovation, quality, and precision. Our portfolio includes sustainable manufacturing solutions based on turning, milling, grinding, boring, ultrasonic, laser technology, and additive manufacturing.
